Meaning of Active Voice And Passive Voice In English Grammar

Active Voice means a sentence has a subject that acts upon its verb.

In other words, a verb is used in the active voice when the doer of an action is made to function as the subject. E.g:
1. The teacher is teaching the students.
2. The lion killed the goat.
3. He preached a good sermon on Sunday.

Passive Voice on the other hand, is the recipient of the verb’s action. It is used in the passive when the receiver (object) of an action is made to function as the subject. Examples:
1. The students are being taught by the teacher.
2. The goat was killed by the lion.
3. A good sermon was preached by him, the previous Sunday.

Assignment
1. The Police arrested the suspect.
2. The whole congregation built the Church.
3. The Gardener is cutting the grass.
4. Audu left the examination papers on the table.
5. The children boiled yam for so long.

In summary, active and passive voice are very important in English grammar. They are interwoven and help to balance a good sentence in our written and English Communication skills.
