Sentences: Meaning And Types

A sentence is a group of words that form a statement, command, exclamation or question. It contains a subject and a verb. A sentence may contain one or more clauses or phrases.

When writing a sentence, the first letter word must be in capital and it ends with one of the following punctuation marks such as full stop, exclamation mark, question mark etc. A sentence must express a complete thought.

There are three main types of sentence. They are simple sentence, Compound sentence and Complex sentence.

Simple Sentence:- A simple sentence is a group of words that has a finite verb and expresses a complete thought. E.g Ada is on her way to work.

Compound Sentence: Is formed when two simple sentences or (independent Clauses are joined together by using simple conjunction which have only one part such as and, but, still, however, although, whereas etc. E.g. John and James won prizes in a dancing competition.

Complex Sentence:- Complex sentence is a sentence with one main or independent clause and one or more subordinate or dependent clause. A clause is a group of words that has a finite verb. It may not start a capital letter and neither does it end with a full stop because it is supposed to be a part of a sentence. It is therefore possible to have set of words that are described at a time as a clause and another time as a sentence.

 

In conclusion, sentences are very important in our daily grammatical structures, composition and essay writings. Good sentences must have all of the following – an idea, statement, command, exclamation or question, a subject and verb including  one or more clauses or phrases.
