Nnamdi Kanu: Biography, His Agitation, Arrest And Net Worth
Nnamdi Kanu has his real name as Nnamdi Kenny Okwu Kanu. He is a Nigerian political activist who is currently leading the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He was based in the United Kingdom before taking up the challenge to emancipate his people the marginalization of the Federal government of Nigeria.
He is has a large fan base or supporters especially his Ibo people who feel marginalized over the years.
Nnamdi was born in Isiama Afara, Abia State Nigeria in the 1970s to the parents of HRM Eze Israel Okwu Kanu (JP) and Ugoeze Nnenne Kanu. He is the first son of five children in the family.
Nnamdi Kanu’s Educational Background
Nnamdi Kanu had his primary education at Library Avenue Primary School, Umuahia and Government College, Abia State respectively.
He was offered admission for a degree programme at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, but abandoned his studies, due to continuous strikes occasioned by the University lecturers, (ASUU) to seek a degree in Europe countries.
While in Europe, he was moved by the marginalization of the Ibos by the Federal Government of Nigeria and vowed to liberate and restore the Biafra State which was then started by the Ikemba of Nnewi, the late Ojukwu in the 1960s.
Kanu therefore took over from Ralph Uwazuruike, former (IPOB) leader after he was found wanting, doing the contrary for personal gains at the expense of the Biafra struggle.
The IPOB leader was first arrested in 2015 in his hotel room at Golden Tulip Essential Hotel, Ikeja Lagos by the Nigerian Security Service (SSS), the Department of State Services (DSS) and was subsequently detained in Abuja.
His arrest was greeted by mass protest across different parts of the south eastern and south south of the country.
Nnamdi Kanu was granted bail in 2015 by a Magistrate Court in Wuse 2, Abuja, Nigeria. After what is widely described as a long battle between the executive and the judiciary, he was finally arraigned in Court in the month of November 23, 2015 in Abuja. After a prolonged detention, he was released in 2017.
Again, a raid was carried out in his country home which led to bloody clash between the government security agents and his strong supporters.
The IPOB leader eventually fled the country into Europe country where he continued his agitation for the actualization of Biafra.
In June 2023, the activist was re-arrested through a joint partnership between the Nigerian Intelligence Service and Interpol. He was brought back to Nigeria to face trial.
Nnamdi Kanu has again been arraigned in Court while he remained detained in the custody of Department of the State Services (DSS).
Nnamdi’s arrest, extradition, detention and his trial have been seen by many as unfortunate, judging from the fact that his agitations centre on the marginalization of the Ibo people over the years and a call for justice, equity and fair play.
While the Federal Government of Nigeria rejoices over his arrest and subsequent detention, other factions advocated for caution and strict observance of the rule of law in his trial.
As the Nigerian people and indeed the entire world await the outcome of Nnamdi Kanu’s trial, the Nigerian activist has become more famous and globally recognized for his fight against the marginalization of his people.
His Personal Life
Nnamdi Kanu has been happily married to his lovely wife, Uchechi Kanu since 2016 and the union is blessed with a baby boy while he was in detention.
