Pope Skinny, known by his stage name, has his birth name as Edwin Kwame Ohene Darko. He is a famous Ghanaian singer, songwriter, rapper and radio presenter.

He was born on January 22, 1987 in Amanokrom Akuapem, in the eastern region of Ghana to the family of Mr. William Akonnor and Mrs. Susan Ohene Darko. Pope Skinny was raised in Accra, Ghana.

 

Pope Skinny’s Educational Background

Pope Skinny had his elementary education at Base Ordinance Depot School, Burma Camp, Accra and Senior Secondary education at Aburi, both in Ghana. Nothing much is known about his educational background.

Pope Skinny’s Music Career

Pope Skinny kick-started his music career dated back to his days in the Junior Secondary School, when he used to rap in his own dialect, Akuapem, entertaining his friends and performing at events and shows like Kidafest and Fun World.

He was said to have formed a rap group with two of his colleagues: King Palma and Abortion, known as Kokrokoo which later disbanded after a year of its existence.

Pope Skinny founded another group called Nsoi. The group was set up in collaboration with another rapper, Shankoma.

The group received wide recognition and over time, went on to win the FIESTA competition in 2001.

He also featured in Abortion‘s (his ex-group mate) album, titled Sikilitele while in high school and upon graduation, he released his debut album, Mri Pa which translated as Good Time in 2005.

The album was an instant hit as most of the singles became street anthems. The project had the collaboration of top Ghanaian artistes like Nkasei, Castro and Bukbak.

Pope Skinny was signed under the record label, Prince Dave Records.

Sadly, the death of his long time friend, mentor and producer, Prince Dave affected him negatively as he took a break to mourn the man he described as a colossus in his musical influence.

Skinny made a comeback and since remained on the music top table doing exploits.

He has since released good number of hit singles, including:

Yekor Browsi which is translated as We Are Going To Browse.

Ghanaian Girlz, featuring rapper 4×4. The song was a hit and received wide airplay on major radio and TV stations across Ghana.
