Mzee has his real name as Mzilikazi Wa Afrika. He is a South African multi-international award-winning investigative journalist and now a fast upcoming and talented musician and producer.

Date and year of his birth are however not known. Mzee grew up in South Africa where he had his elementary and higher education respectively.

His Music Career

Mzee began as an investigative journalist who eventually made a U-turn into the field of music.

Mzee became professionally known in music some years back when he wrote his first song for his church at a young age of 11 years in his village in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga Province – near the Kruger National Park.

Like his success story in journalism, Mzee never looked back but was determined to making it big in the music field by writing songs and saving money to build his own recording studio which he funnily described as his first wife.

In an interview, Mzee revealed that DJ Oskido is his mentor who shot him to international limelight and helped him with his music production.

DJ Oskido  is a radio presenter and he used the opportunity to promote Mzee’ songs on his show Oskido’s Church Groove, one of the most popular and influential house music shows in South Africa.

Mzee had his international break in 2008 when he signed a deal with Ocha Records, a USA based independent record label owned by house music gurus Carlos “Casamena” Mena and Osunlade.

Mzee has so far caught the attention of international DJ stars and producers including the likes of DJ Sergio from Italy and DJ Victor Da Silver from Switzerland were amongst the first to remix Mzee’s songs.

Mzee has also collaborated with other renowned international musicians like Lynne E from London, Clara “Felina” Creantor from France, Brazilian producer Roger Benou, and award winning Nigerian Jazz musician, Kunle Ayo.

Mzee also produced songs for Caribbean born American actor, Antonio David Lyons, South African based Senegalese hip-hop crew Nomadji, award winning Ethiopian reggae star Johnny Ragga and award winning Zimbabwean international star Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, who once graced the cover of the influential Time Magazine, and remixed one of his classic songs Neria for the dance floor among others.

The song became one of the best house songs in Botswana for 2008.

Mzee is indeed creative and highly talented young man with dogged  ambition and  vision about Africa and the world at large. This is aptly exemplified by projecting the good image of African continent and collaborating with different musicians from all over the world.
