Pass English In WAEC/NECO And Other Exams Knowing Verb Agreement

 

A verb in a simpler term means agreement between a verb and it’s subject to make a correct sentence.

Verb agreement is very important in sentences, to tackle Lexis and structures, write a good essay and letter writing in WAEC/NECO and other relevant examinations.

A verb changes form to agree with its subject. For instance, if the subject is in the first person, the second person or in the plural form, the verb does not change form. I eat. He eats. We eat. They eat. She eat.

However, if the subject is in the third person and in the singular number, an ‘s’ is added to its verb. For example, it rains. He writes well.

If two singular subjects in the third person are joined by and, the verb does not change form. E.g. John and James like eba. The boy and his friend always come to school.

So, the rule is that if these subjects are singular, it must take a singular verb or verse versa.

Consider these sentences below:

1. Neither of the boys is coming.
2. Nobody writes when the teacher talks.
3. John or his friend is wanted by the principal.
4. Anyone is free to answer the question that follows.
5. Anybody has the right to protest.
6. One of them has just arrived.
7. Everybody understands the message
8. None of the robbers is freed.
9. Someone knocks at the door.
10. Each of the students has the book.
11. Neither Sam nor John is interested in the game and not are

interested in the game.

12. The airman and his friend were saved and not was saved.
13. Each of the boys was given a prize and not were given the prize.
14. He said the everybody is allowed and everybody are allowed.
15. The Prince with his friend were promoted. Not was promoted.
16. Nobody knows the result of the election and nobody know the result of the election.
17. The captain and his crew were rescued.
18. Tom and James have arrived. Not has arrived.
19. Neither of my parents was informed.
20. A few in my class speak French and not speaks French.
21. Several of the actresses on the stage remember the message.
22. He is one of the most successful actors in Nigeria and not actor in Nigeria.
23. None in my class speaks German. Not none in my class speak German. The sentence refers to just one of them.
24. Everybody in the Auditorium was praised by the Head teacher. Not everybody were praised.
25. Neither Peter nor Paul was hurt. Not neither Peter nor Paul were hurt.
26. Does everyone understand the question? The verb – understand must be in singular form.
27. Not one of us understands it.
28. Again, not one of us does understand it.
29. Ask one of the workers who knows how to do it.
30. Samuel is one of the players who plays the game well.

 

In summary, we need verb agreement in our daily English spoken and written to equip us to pass the subject in WAEC/NECO, UTME and other relevant examinations.
