One Hundred Million Naira ransom was demanded by the by the captors for their release. They were however released on December 21, 2012 at 10:30pm after about six days in their den with no reported amount paid as ransom.

Okolie got married to the love of his life, Jessica Nwakah. The traditional and white wedding came up on April 15, 2017 and December 16, 2017 respectively. They welcome their first child in 2019.
