Genevieve Nnaji was born into a family of 8 children on May 3,  1979 in Mbaise, Imo State Nigeria.

She grew up in Lagos, the fourth of eight children and was brought up in a middle class environment, her father being an engineer and her mother a teacher.

Genevieve is a Nigerian actress, producer, director and a  Philanthropist.  She is known to be selective of her roles in movies and is one of the Nollywood highest paid and earned more in endorsements than movies.

She won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 2005, making her the first actress to win the award.

In 2011, she was honoured as a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) by the Nigerian government for her contribution to Nollywood movie industry in Nigeria.

Her Early life and Education

Genevieve had her elementary education and  Methodist Girls College Yaba, Lagos, and thereafter went  to the University of Lagos where she bagged a bachelor’s degree in Creative Arts. While at the university, she began auditioning for acting jobs in Nollywood.

Her Career

Genevieve started her acting career at a very tender age of 8 and she featured as an actress in the then popular television soap opera Ripples.

In 1998 at the age of 19 she was introduced into Nigerian Nollywood industry which was growing at the time and the movie “Most Wanted”,Last Party”, Mark of the Beast” and “Ijele” brought her fame by many both home and abroad.

She has starred in over 100 Nollywood movies so far.

As at 2009, Genevieve was one of the best and highest paid actresses in Nollywood. Owe to her numerous and wonderful contributions to the Nigeria movie industry, she became the first actress to be awarded Best Actress at the 2001 City Peoples Awards, and this award made Genevieve to become the first to be given such awards which before then was only given  to politicians and business moguls.

She was also the first actress to be awarded as Best Actress by the Censors Board of Nigeria in 2003.

In 2009, she was referred to as the Julia Roberts of Africa by Oprah Winfrey.

In 2004 Nnaji signed a recording contract with EKB Records, a Ghanaian record label, and released her debut album One Logologo Line, a mix of R&B, Hip-Hop and Urban music.

Genevieve no doubt makes much more money in endorsements than in movie business and has featured in several commercials some of which include those of Pronto beverage and Omo detergent. Others are:

She was Brand Ambassador for “Face of Lux in 2004 in Nigeria and the deal was speculated to be a highly lucrative sponsorship deal of about N40 million Naira.

Genevieve was also a representative of Cintrion Energy drink and the deal is believed to have an endorsement fees of about N50 million Naira.

Genevieve entered deal with Amstel and “Face of MUD”  cosmetics in Nigeria and the deals are believed too to have same amount in endorsement deals of about N30 million Naira each.

Etisalat, now 9 Mobile is about N90 million Naira, they said. Genevieve is smart, intelligent and these salient qualities of her put her at an advantage of sustaining deals even before any termination could take place.

In 2008, Genevieve launched the clothing line, “St. Genevieve”. Genevieve, in her spirit of being one’s brother’s keeper donated its proceeds to charity and orphanages.

Awards and nominations

Genevieve has received several awards and nominations just too numerous to mention, including the Best Actress of the year award at the 2001 City People Awards.

The Best Actress in a Leading Role award at the 2005 edition Africa Movie Academy Awards.

Awards are presented annually to deserving professionals or non-African professionals as well who have excel or contributed to the African film industry. It was this award that Genevieve received.

It was founded by Peace Anyiam-Osigwe and is run through the Africa Film Academy.

The awards are aimed at honouring and promoting excellence in the African movie industry as well as uniting the African continent through arts and culture.  Celebrities, politicians, journalists, actresses and actors from all across the globe attended this unique event.

The event was held in June 2016 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria.

Genevieve  Net worth is well over $5 million dollars. She will still add more to her laurels.
