Usman Baba Pategi, also fondly called Samanja Mazan Fama is a veteran retired Nigerian Army actor, script writer and director.

He worked with Yusuf Ladan, Mamman Ladan and Idi Jibril an NTA staff to introduce the Hausa comedy known now as Kannywood, Hausa films in the 80s.

Usman was born on May 20, 1942 into the Royal House of Pategi Emirate in Pategi, a Nupe town in now Kwara state. His father was the Etsu Usman Patako, the king of Pategi.

Usman Pategi;s Educational Background

Pategi had his early education in Pategi primary school and Ilorin Middle School where he obtained his first and secondary school certificates respectively.

He later moved to Kaduna to live with his uncle Alhaji Audu Bida.

His Career

Pategi worked with public works department in the mechanical store, before joining Northern Broadcasting Corporation, (NBC) in Kaduna.
He joined the Nigeria Army in the 60s when an Army captain during the Nigerian civil war came to look for youths in Northern Nigeria to be enlisted into the Nigerian Army.

The veteran left the Broadcasting Cooperation to join the army and trained at the Signal Training School, Apapa Lagos. He served under the late General Sani Abacha and General Sani Sami.

After his retirement in the Army in 1985, he went into full time acting career.
He was the originator of the popular drama at the FRCN Kaduna known as Samanja Maza Fama, meaning Sergeant-Major (SerMajor) owing to his wealth of experience he got in his army career.

The highly creative and talented kannywood star also directs and writes movies mostly in Hausa genres. The popular actor, writer and director has starred in several Hausa movies notably as:
• Samanja
• Yusuf’s Ladan’s
• Zaman Duniya Iyawa Ne among numerous others.

Pategi mostly appear as a police or soldier in their common practice and dramatize moves in most movies, which he revealed was due to the experience he got in the army.

The veteran Kannywood actor has performed at the Army Day Celebration, Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja and several other historic events across Nigeria. He is renowned in the movie, ‘Samanja’ mimicking Hausa/English and pidgin English, the way Nigerian soldiers usually speak.

Baba Pategi’s Marital Life

Baba Pategi has three wives and 20 children. He lost one of his wives named Hajiya Maryam Baba some years back.

In 2010, Pategi was said to have travelled to India for heart surgery and was assisted with the sum of N1.5 million by the Chairman, Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote.
