Nigerian Army: Ranks And Salaries Structures 2023

The Nigerian military is made up of three different forces, namely, the Army, Navy and the Air force with each playing different role of protecting the country against internal and external aggression.

The military is also charged with other vital functions outside defending the country against any attack, whether within or outside like performing humanitarian functions in cases of an emergency, to guard critical areas or establishments, law enforcement, humanitarian missions, enemy targets, base security and promoting peace in the country.

The Nigerian military is of wider society, which has its own infrastructure such as Schools, Banks, different utilities, Logistics, food production, Health and medical services.

In this post, we shall take a look at the three branches of Nigerian military forces – the Navy, Airforce and the Army, their various functions, ranks and of course their salary structures 2023.

We begin with the Nigerian Navy whose function to protect the country from sea-related warfare. They equally have their responsibilities to marine cleanups, oil thefts, and others with their bases in Abuja, Bayelsa, Calabar, Port Harcourt and Lagos respectively.

The Nigerian Air Force is one of the forces and adjudged the largest in Africa with about 10,000 active personnel at any given time. They have lots of modern fighting jets, helicopters and other equipments across their bases.

The Army is the largest component of the Nigerian Military Forces with over 100,000 soldiers on ground. In addition, it also ranked one of the best equipped armed forces in Africa.

 

The ranks of the Nigerian Army is essentially the same but with different names. For instance, a Major General in the Army is a two star General who is addressed as a Rear Admiral in the Navy. They both enjoy same salary structures and benefits as it applies.

Basically we have two categories of ranks in the Nigerian Army –  the non-commissioned officers and the commissioned officers. The non-commissioned officers are personnel, the under-ranked who have not earned a commission to the level of an officer. The non-commissioned personnel or men in the Nigerian Army can move to the commissioned officers either by passing through the Nigerian Defence Academy or by facing a Board that will determine their promotion to such an enviable rank.

There are eight ranks of non-commissioned officers in the Nigerian Army, ranging from the highest to lowest. They include:

• Master Warrant Officer
• Warrant Officer
• Staff Sergeant
• Sergeant
• Corporal
• Lance Corporal
• Private Recruit.

The commissioned officers, on the other hand earn a commission which of course are gazetted.

In the Nigerian Army, there are 11 ranks of commissioned officers,  from highest to lowest:

• Field Marshal, which is a five star General. It is the highest rank in the Nigerian military and no Nigerian has ever attained such rank in the history of Nigeria.
• General: Is next in rank to Field Marshal. It is the highest rank that has ever been achieved by a Nigerian. A four-star rank in Nigeria and ranked as nine by NATO.
• Lieutenant General: This is another very high commissioned officer with a three star in the Nigerian army.
• Major General: Is an officer next to Lieutenant General with a two star. In Nigeria, it is ranked with two stars while NATO indicates it as seven.
• Brigadier General: Is a one star General in the Nigeria army. NATO indicates the rank as six.
• Colonel: A Colonel is regarded as the beginning of a senior rank in the Nigerian military. They are often described as the red-officers next to a Brigadier General and they are lower level commissioned officer by the highest field officer.
• Lieutenant Colonel: is deputy and the rank immediately following a Colonel in the Nigerian army. He is the field officer of the middle level.
• A Major is classified as the lower category of the field officer. NATO indicates it by three.
• A Captain in the Nigerian army constitutes the highest rank in the tactical troops. It is indicated by NATO as two.
• First Lieutenant. Is next in rank after Captain in the Nigerian army. He is the deputy of the Captain which NATO sees as just one.
• Second Lieutenant: He is subordinate to the First Lieutenant but has the same NATO ranking.

Salary structures of the Nigerian Army 2023

Below are the salary structures of the Nigerian Army 2023, depending on the rank of the officer. The non –commissioned Officers include:

• Master Warrant Officer – N90,000
• Warrant Officer – N80,000
• Staff Sergeant – N68,000
• Sergeant – N63,000
• Corporal – N58,000
• Lance Corporal earns about N54,000-55,000
• Private Soldier earns about N48,000-49,000.

The salaries of the commissioned officers on the other hand, are higher with better benefits and allowances. They include:

• General – N1.5 million
• Lieutenant General – N1 million
• Major General – N950,000
• Brigadier General- N750,000
• Colonel – N550,000
• Lieutenant Colonel – N350,000
• Major – N300,000
• Captain – N220,000
• Lieutenant – N180,000
• Second Lieutenant – N120,000.

In conclusion, the Nigerian Military Forces as a whole is a big organization charged with the responsibility of defending the country against any attack be it internal or external.

Each of the branch has its obligations and the ranks are different, but all of them are very important and perform basically the same function of fighting crimes and defending the country against any attack.
