Chinedu Okoli was born 23 November 1983 in Enugu State, Nigeria. His family is from Umunze in Orumba South LGA, Anambra State, Nigeria. He is widely known by his stage name Flavour and is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, performer and a dancer.

Early life And Career

Flavour had a humble beginning in his musical career as a drummer for a local church in his home town of Enugu State. Today, Flavour is popularly known not only in Nigeria but across Africa and the world for his hit song “Nwa Baby (Ashawo Remix)”. He is currently signed to 2nite Entertainment.

In 1996, Flavour was placed on educational scholarship to study music and this gesture paved the way for him of which after three years of playing the drums, Flavour started playing the drums professionally. This golden opportunity launched him into a star in the musical industry.

 

In 1999, Flavour graduated  from playing the drums to playing the keyboard which was an enviable record. He also used to provide backing vocals for other musicians at Sound City.

 

Flavour, who is widely known to sing fluently and larvishly in Igbo language, began his music career at a young age of 13, at that time playing the drums for his church choir in Enugu. The pastor in charge of his church saw in the talents in this young boy and introduced him to a friend, one Chris I. Ordor, the Sound City Communications Chief Executive Officer.

In 2005, he released his self-titled debut album N’abania. In 2010, Flavour released yet his second studio album Uplifted. It was supported by the singles “Nwa Baby (Ashawo Remix)”, “Adamma”, and “Oyi Remix”. The success recorded by these albums made Flavour one of Africa’s best artists.

Flavour became a figure to reckon with in music field as he was booked to feature at numerous concerts and social events following the release of Uplifted.

 

His Career

At the age of 19, Flavour came into the limelight of the  Nigerian musical industry as a drummer and pianist for a local Enugu band. After learning to play drums professionally, Flavour received an offer to perform at City Centre, Enugu. The unpresidented crowd at City Centre gave him the rare inspiration to work harder and climbed to greater heights in his musical career. His educational background in music was an added advantage.

N’abania

In 2005, N’abania Flavour released his debut album N’abania through Obaino Music. The album’s success was relative and limited to Eastern Nigeria, particularly Enugu State. Flavour later collaborated with Mr Raw on the album’s lead single titled “N’abania”. The song was recorded at Kingsley Ogoro’s music studio in Lagos, Nigeria.

Uplifted

While working on the album in 2010, Flavour believed the album would be a huge success having worked so hard to improve on the previous work.  His good plan came true when the album was released and recorded an unimaginable music breakthrough both home and abroad. The album’s top singles include “Nwa Baby (Ashawo Remix)”, “Adamma”, and “Oyi Remix” featuring Tiwa Savage.

 Blessed

Blessed was released on 18 October 2012 through 2nite Entertainment and iROCKING LTD. The album came up after  Uplifted was released. Is widely believed to be Flavour’s biggest album till date because of its wide acceptance by fans and producers alike.

In an interview granted iROKTV, Flavour admitted he was growing in the industry: “I think I’m growing. This is my third album… Now it’s time to give them the music, like define myself. I have to be more mature with my music, lyrics and instrumentation wise. I worked with tons of producers and the whole production process made sense.”

2014: Thankful

Thankful was another released hit in December 2014. The album consists of 22 tracks and runs for one hour seventeen minutes and it sold for thousands of copies across Nigeria and Africa.

 Ijele – The Traveler

Then came Ijele The Traveller, which is the latest album released in 2017. This has added to his brilliant record in music. Is loaded with 17 tracks – including a track featuring a blind Sierra Leonean fan.

Controversy/Challenge

There was a controversy on Flavour N’abania by the Nigerian Entertainment on 29 August 2012 involving a Ghanian duo Wutah over an alleged theft of Kwarikwa”. The singing duo accused Flavour N’abania of stealing their song’s rhythm, chorus, and tempo. This challenge did not however dampen his spirit to climb higher in music.
