Chiwatalu Agu is a renowned Nollywood actor, television personality and a comedian known for his use of slangs and funny phrases. He is highly creative, highly gifted and highly talented actor who has made name both locally and internationally in movies.
He was born on 5th March 1956 in Enugu town, Enugu State Nigeria. He hails from Amokwe village in Udi Local Government area of Enugu State.
Educational Background
Chiwatalu Agu had his primary school education in Municipal Council School, and St. Luke Primary school both in Ogui Urban area and Conception of Immaculate College, CIC both in Enugu state. He also went to Miinchen College in Enugu where he had Diploma in Dramatic Arts. After obtaining his primary and secondary certificates respectively, he left for Germany for further studies in Wisent College. He returned back to Nigeria after his successful studies abroad.
His Acting Career
Agu is one of the very few Nollywood actors who started his acting career even long before the emergence of Nollywood in Nigeria. He kick-started his acting career in 1981when he featured in an NTA drama, ‘Things Fall Apart’ by Chinua Achebe, where he played the role of Anikwu.
He featured prominently in the Nigerian Television Authority, Channel 8 Enugu’s Ikoro. The series which was produced by Joe Onyekwelu, has featured Agu in Enugu Television Channel 50 and now Enugu State Broadcasting Service in Baby Come Now and Ripples, produced by the renowned producer, Zeb Ejiro.
In 1987, Agu relocated to Lagos where starred in the popular soap Opera. The Ripples, was also produced by Zeb Ejiro. In this movie, Agu played the role of Chief Abunna, the OKemilinaezoluora 1 of Etiti and the Odezulumba of Ogunike town.
This veteran actor became more popular as he featured in one of the blockbuster movie, “Living In Bondage”. This movie was produced by Kenneth Nnebue and featured alongside Nollywood stars like Kenneth Okonkwo and Kanayo O. Kanayo.
Agu has starred in well over 300 movies since his acting career about 3 decades including the popular hit movie Taboo, a movie where he acted and played the role of Ichie Ogwu.
Other popular movies to his credit are Last Offala, Daddy Must Obey, Ripples, Return of Justice, By Fire, Traditional Marriage (1 & 2), Fire on the Mountain (1 &2), the Price of Sacrifice, The Priest Must Die and several others too numerous to mention here.
Awards
Chiwatalu Agu like other celebrities is a recipient of over 50 awards including the following few mentioned below:
• Best indigenous actor at the Nollywood Movie Awards in 2012 for his role in Nwocha.
• Best supporting actor at Zulu African Film Academy Awards in 2011 for his role in movie, The Maidens.
Agu was also nominated for Best actor in a supporting role at the 4th Annual African Movie Academy Awards for his outstanding role, Across the Niger and several others.
Agu revealed that his outstanding influence in Nollywood has helped to raise the industry to an unimaginable height, as was clearly demonstrated by the former President Jonathan of Nigeria who magnanimously approved a huge sum of N3 billion Naira for Nollywood.
What can we say about this great and respectable Nollywood figure? Some described him as a man of honour and clean hands who would not like to smear his image in the mud. Some however criticized him as controversial owing to his opinion on a very sensitive issue raised recently concerning Nollywood sexual harassment.
Agu argued that it was a global phenomenon and that the female actresses in Nigeria are hard working highly talented and creative which his critics described as controversial. He however concluded that young actors should focus more on their business and leave the Censor Board to judge rather than criticizing.
On Politics, Agu narrated that he abhors politics which he sees as dirt game especially as it is being practiced in Nigeria. He however advised that the right people should be voted into power to be able to move the country forward.
He also advised his colleagues, Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) to play politics according to the rule of the game and avoid violence so that the union can forge ahead peacefully and progressively.

Agu is happily married to Nkechi and the union is blessed with 5 children, 3 sons and 2 daughters.
