Natasha Akpoti has her full name as Natasha Hadiza Akpoti Uduaghan. She is a Nigerian-Nkrainian barrister, entrepreneur, politician and a Senator of the 10th Nigerian National Assembly representing Kogi Central Senatorial District since 2023.

She was born on December 9, 1979 in Ilorin, Kwara State to a Nigerian father and Ukrainian mother. Natasha hails from Ebeiba-Ihima in Okehi Local Government of Kogi State of Nigeria. She is of Ebira by tribe, a Christian by religion and a half-cast, partly Nigerian and Ukrainian. Her father, Dr. Jimoh Abdul Akpoti, a medical doctor, now deceased, is from Kogi and her mother, Ludmila Kravchenk, is from Chernivtsi, Ukraine.

Natasha is the second child in a family of four.

 

Natashas Educational Background

Akpoti had her primary and secondary school education at Christ the King Nursery Primary School in Okene, Kogi State. She later attended Government Unity Girls Secondary School, Oboroke also in Kogi State and Federal Government College, Idoani in Ondo State where she obtained her first and secondary school certificates respectively.

Natasha later attended the University of Abuja and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 2004. She proceeded to the Nigerian Law School and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2005.

In 2011, she went for her MBA in Oil and Gas management from the University of Dundee and obtained her M.Sc in Petroleum Law and Policy in 2012.

Natasha Akpoti’s Career

Akpoti worked as a legal counsel at Brass LNG between 2007 and 2010.

Natasha was shot to limelight when she presented an investigative report to the National Assembly on March 1, 2018 that exposed corruption at the Ajaokuta Steel Mill.

The report was opposed by the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, accusing Natasha of misinformation. Another group alleged that she was sponsoring a campaign. After a legal hearing by the High Court sitting in Abuja, The Authority Newspaper, Ifeanyi Ubah and Williams Orji were ordered to pay the sum of 10 million Naira to Natasha for libelous publication against her.

 

Natasha Akpoti’s journey into politics started when she contested the Gubernatorial election under (SDP) in November 16, 2019 and lost.

She is beautiful, outspoken and currently a lawmaker at the Nigerian Senate under the Peoples since 2023.

In 2015, Natasha founded the Builders Hub Impact Investment Program (BHIIP). She was awarded the African Women Leadership Award by Jewel Taylor, the former vice president of the Liberia.

In December 2017, Natasha received the presidential award from the Nigerian Society of Engineers following her activism for the revival of the Ajaokuta Steel Mill.

In November 16 2019, Natasha vied for Governorship position in Kogi State under the platform of Social Democratic Party (SDP) and lost.

In 2023, Natasha was elected a senator at the Nigerian Senate under the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP). She has remained outspoken, vibrant who many described as a senator who stands for justice and equity.

Controversies And Suspension From The Nigerian Senate

In February 2025, Natashi Akpoti accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment on Arise News, claiming the incident occurred on December 8, 2023.

The controversy escalated on February 20, 2025, when she confronted Akpabio after finding her nameplate removed from her usual seat in the Chamber.

Akpabio denied the sexual harassment allegations, questioning their timing and suggesting they emerged only after changes to her committee assignment. He also referenced Akpoti-Uduaghan’s history of making similar unproven allegations against other public figures.

On March 6, 2025, following a report from the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended for six months for violating Sections 6.1 and 6.2 of the Senate Standing Orders 2023.

Akpoti’s suspension included barring access to her office, withholding her salary, and withdrawing her security details.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petition on the sexual harassment allegations was dismissed on procedural rather than substantive grounds. In other words, there was no investigation into the validity or otherwise of the allegations and the petition was thrown out on a technicality.

The reason given was that she had “signed the petition herself” as cited by the head of the Ethics Committee, Senator Imasuen who described it as “dead on arrival”. Senate Leader Bamidele Opeyemi clarified that the suspension was due to “persistent acts of misconduct” including refusing to sit in her assigned seat, speaking without recognition, engaging in disruptive behavior, and making “abusive remarks” against Senate leadership—not for her sexual harassment allegations. The report also advised her to apologize to Mr. Akpabio for the allegations she made against him.

Akpoti-Uduaghan has insisted she will not apologise, instead escalating the matter by presenting her case at a United Nations forum. Speaking at the Women in Parliament session during the Inter-Parliamentary Union meeting at the United Nations in New York, she called for international intervention to hold the Nigerian Senate accountable.

The suspension of Natasha Akpoti has received wide condemnation from various civil society groups including the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties and the Coalition of National Civil Society Organizations and  called for a more transparent, fair and impartial investigation into the matter. They claimed Natasha’s case should be given fair hearing and demanded that the Senate reverse the suspension and “respect the rule of law”.

Prior to this recent controversies, Natasha Akpoti has had series of controversies.

In 2020, Joy Nunieh, a lawyer and former acting managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), made various accusations of corruption, bullying and harassment against Akpabio in a press conference and subsequent interview with Arise News. She alleged that at one point she had been forced to slap Akpabio to prevent him sexually harassing her. As of Friday March 9 2025, Akpabio has threatened to sue Nunieh for those allegations.

In October 2023, during her Kogi State governorship campaign under the Social Democratic Party, Natasha Akpoti accused former presidential aide Reno Omokri of sexually harassing her at a state banquet in Aso Rock on May 6, 2014. Omokri denied these allegations, providing evidence including passport stamps showing he was in the United States at the time of the alleged incident.

According to Omokri, Akpoti-Uduaghan later deleted her accusations from social media, and the matter was settled out of court after intervention by a clergyman.

Natasha Akpoti is a mother of four children, three boys and a daughter. She had 3 children for her ex-husband and one child for her current husband, Emmanuel Oritsejolomi Uduaghan, the Alema of Warri.

Natasha got married to Emmanuel Oritsejolomi Uduaghan, the Alema of Warri in a ceremony at Ihima on March 5, 2022. The names of her children are Daniel, Zein, Nadia and Prince Reign Emmanuel Uduaghan.
