Alban Uzoma Nwapa is his birth name but widely and fondly called Dr. Alban. He is a renowned Nigerian-Swedish recording artist and producer with his own record label, ‘Dr. Records’ known for Eurodance/hip-hop reggae in a dancehall style.
Dr. Alban was born August 26, 1957 into a family of 10 children in Oguta, Imo state in south eastern Nigeria. He grew up in Imo State, his original home of birth.
Dr. Alban had his primary education in Oguta and proceeded to Christ The King College, both in Imo State.
He later studied Dentistry in one of the Sweden Universities at the young age of 23. Upon graduation, he set up his own Dentistry alongside DJ profession which ultimately prepared his journey into music career.
His Musical Career
Dr. Alban began his musical journey in 1990 when he met Denniz Pop from the SweMix label and, together with Denniz and rap artist Leila K, released his first record Hello Afrika. It was the time he also earned the stage name, Dr. Alban.
Dr Alban released his debut album which included hits like “Hello Afrika” and “No Coke”. The two albums were very successful with large volume of sales running into million copies.
The album itself was quite successful and earned him gold certification awards in numerous markets including Germany (for sales of over 250,000 units), Austria (25,000), and Switzerland (25,000) respectively.
The hard working, highly creative and talented star released a second album, One Love, recording a higher success than the first album.
Dr. Alban has so far released several hit singles including:
“It’s My Life” (which was used as background music for a Tampax advert). The song attained its No.1 chat in Israel, Austria, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Germany, and No.2 in Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
The song “It’s My Life” also went viral in Germany recording huge sales of over 500,000 units, in the Netherlands 75,000 and over two million copies overall in Europe.
The album in turn reached the top of the album chart in Austria and entered the top five in Switzerland. It also reached No.6 in Germany. It went gold in Germany (for sales of over 250,000 units) and platinum both in Austria and Switzerland (both 50,000).
Alban’s third album Look Who’s Talking!, released in 1994, hit the top 10 in numerous markets including Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The album was the first to earn Alban a gold certification award in his home country of Sweden for sales of over 50,000 units.
The talented superstar founded his own record label, Dr. Records and went further to release another album, ‘Born in Africa’ in 1996. The album also recorded huge success in in Finland, Switzerland and Sweden, Germany, and Austria.
Dr. Alban has so far in the music world sold an estimated 16 million records worldwide and is most famous for his worldwide 1992 hit “It’s My Life”, from the album One Love.
In 2010, Dr. Alban collaborated with Sash! to produce a remake of “Hello Afrika”, “Hello South Afrika”, dedicated to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It was followed by a single consisting of 16 remixes.
In June 2020, Alban released the single “Drama”, also in Swedish, in collaboration with singer Folkhemmet. The song revealed his long relationship with Swedish tabloid journalists.
