The Various Heads Of Academic Institutions In Nigeria

In Nigeria, academic institutions are typically headed by various officials depending on the level of the institution and its structure.

Basically, we have academic institutions like Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education, Secondary institutions and primary institutions respectively.

Below are the common heads of academic institutions in Nigeria:

  1. Universities:
    • Vice-Chancellor (VC): The Vice-Chancellor is the chief executive officer of the university, responsible for its overall administration, academic programs, and policies.
    • Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council: The Pro-Chancellor is the head of the University’s governing council, responsible for overseeing its management and ensuring its smooth functioning.
    • Deputy Vice-Chancellors (DVCs): They assist the Vice-Chancellor in various aspects of university management, often overseeing specific areas such as academics, research, or administration.
  2. Polytechnics:
    • Rector: The Rector is the chief executive officer of the polytechnic, responsible for its overall administration, academic programs, and policies.
    • Chairman of Governing Council: Similar to the Pro-Chancellor in Universities, the Chairman of the Governing Council oversees the management and governance of the polytechnic.
    • Deputy Rectors (DRs): They assist the Rector in various aspects of polytechnic management, similar to the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellors in universities.
  3. Colleges of Education:
    • Provost: The Provost is the chief executive officer of the college, responsible for its overall administration and academic programs.
    • Chairman of Governing Council: Similar to Universities and Polytechnics, the Chairman of the Governing Council oversees the management and governance of the college.
    • Deputy Provosts: They assist the Provost in various administrative and academic matters.

    • Principal: The Principal is the head of the secondary school, responsible for its overall administration, academic programs, and discipline.

    • Headteacher: The Headteacher is the chief administrator of the primary school, responsible for its overall management, academic programs and discipline.
