Essay Writing, its meaning, types and hints.

An essay can be aptly described as short piece of writing, telling story either about the writer or social, political and economic issues bothering mankind.

An essay can be formal or informal. Formal essays are said to be academically enterprising in nature involving serious topics.

An informal essays, on the other hand are personal with more humourous attributes.

1. Narrative Essay: This is an Essay of story telling involving the reader as if they were right there at the scene of what happend. Here the principle of clarity and reality are employed to drive home points or arguments. When a writer tells a story, he states one after another, the small events, action and circumstances that make the story.

To help the reader understand the story better you may use linking adverbs such as then, afterwards, next, therefore, as a result, consequently, secondly, moreover, in addition, lastly etc which link or (join) one sentence or main clause to another, in order to show the relationship between the events, the sentences and main clause expressed.

2. Descriptive Essay: describes a place, an object or event by employing a clever paint of a picture through the writer’s words. Here, it is not advisable to rely on sight but other senses like touch, smell and sound, involving the senses of the reader and their emotions as the writer feels at that particular time.

3. Expository Essay: Expository essay presents a balanced study of the topic. This type of essay has no emotion or scope. It is simply as it is in presentation, as it happened with facts, statistics and examples. Here the writer must have a comprehensive details or knowledge about the topic.

4. Persuasive Essay: as it implies is the one that attempts to make the reader accept the writer’s argument or point of view. In other words, the essay is persuasive with balanced arguments or facts but ultimately created to make the readers accept the fact that the writer’s argument carries more weight.

Hints In Essay Writing

1. Give an interesting and appropriate Title of your Essay.
2. Introduction to your essay, which must involve a brief insight to the topic in the introductory paragraph.
3. Body:- This is where you explain and tell us the story in detail. The content of your essay. It must be in paragraph with simple language or diction straight to the point.
4. Make use of adverb liners to link up your sentences and clause.
5. Make use of correct punctuation marks.
6. Ensure you have an ideal length of between 300 to 500 words.
7. Conclusion:- You conclude by writing the summary of what you have said and if possible, tell us the moral lesson from the story.

In summary, essay writing requires rigorous academic work. We should be guided by excellent presentation, facts and good sense of judgement in tackling it.
