The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a program established in Nigeria with the aim of fostering national unity and integration among young Nigerians.
The NYSC was established on May 22, 1973, by the military administration of General Yakubu Gowon. It was created in response to the challenges Nigeria faced after the civil war (1967-1970) as a means to heal ethnic and religious divisions and promote national cohesion. Over 5 million participants have so far registered since its inception in Nigeria.
The primary objectives of the NYSC include promoting national unity, developing common ties among Nigerian youths and encouraging the spirit of selfless service to the nation.

The NYSC scheme made it compulsory for every Nigerian graduate below the age of 30 to serve their country for a period of one year after completing their tertiary education. Participants are required to serve in states other than their states of origin to expose them to the diversity of Nigeria.
The NYSC orientation camp is the first phase of the program and lasts for three weeks. During this period, corps members undergo physical and mental training, acquire life skills and receive lectures on national unity, entrepreneurship and leadership.
After the orientation camp, corps members are deployed to various places of primary assignment, such as schools, government offices, hospitals and other organizations. They are expected to contribute their skills and knowledge to the development of the host communities.
In addition to their primary assignments, corps members are required to engage in community development activities. These activities may include teaching in schools, healthcare campaigns, environmental sanitation, skills acquisition programs and more.
At the end of the one-year service, corps members participate in a Passing Out Parade (POP) ceremony, which marks the completion of their NYSC program. During this event, certificates of national service are awarded to successful participants.

Inspite of the above mentioned achievements of the programme, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has faced challenges and undergone several reforms challenges since its establishment. While these challenges have sparked debates and discussions about the program’s effectiveness, scrapping the program altogether is a complex decision that requires careful consideration.

- Insecurity: One of the most significant challenges is the issue of security. Corps members are sometimes deployed to areas affected by conflicts, insurgency, or communal clashes, which poses risks to their safety and well-being. Instances of violence, kidnappings and even loss of lives have been reported in some cases, raising concerns about the security of corps members.
